We wish to thank everyone who was involved with the planning and carrying out of our Homecoming activities.  John Massie, who chaired the Steering Committee, did an outstanding job in coordinating all of the events.  He sent a note of thanks to the following: Other committee members—Violet Knox (by far our most significant contributor), Bobby Compton, Lannie Sigmon and Rick Matthews; Significant contributors: Steve Ferguson—photo slide show, Debbie Marsh—food set-up, Kevin Donaldson—set up and beverage table manager (very hectic place), Van Knox—clean up, Aubrey and Nancy Price—manning the kitchen clean up detail, Amy Ferguson—shoring up the grounds (pulling weeds, putting down pine needles, making sure everything look good outside, etc.), Erskine Smith—post event clean up.  Special thanks go to the following for bringing items to share: Margaret Lamberth—china sugar dish; Joe and Peggy Popp—bringing the christening gowns and Mooresville historic items; Cy and Mary Helen Smith—pictures.  As usual, there was a number of our congregation who assisted with little things throughout the meal and afterward in assisting with the cleanup.  We are also grateful to the Deacons for coordinating the workday projects and for the many congregation members who carried out these tasks.  It was a wonderful day!

Congratulations to Jim and Geneva Adams who will celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary on November 20th.

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it it; for I shall not pass this way again.

Blessed are they who have the gift of making friends, for it is one of God’s best gifts.  It involves many things, but, above all, the power of giving out of one’s self and appreciating whatever is noble and loving in another.

Memorial Day emerged from the shadows of the Civil War.  It was first observed in the South.  Before the close of the war, a group of women decorated the graves of those who had died in that war.  A few years later, in 1868, May 30th was set aside as a day for placing flowers on the graves of soldiers throughout the United States. Soon Memorial Day was observed each year across the country.  In the years since World War II it has become a day when many Christians remember those who have gone before us in the faith.

"We Shall Mount Up with Wings Like Eagles"

Based on Isaiah 40:28-31

Do you know, have you heard, that the everlasting God,

the Lord, our Creator, never grows tired or weary?

Do you know, have you heard, if we wait upon the Lord,

our God and Creator, we will gain new strength.

And we shall mount up with wings like eagles,

and we shall run and never faint.

The Lord renews our strength, He renews our power,

and we shall mount up like eagles' wings.

Each year is a new beginning … a golden dawn on the horizon of life.

Riches are the least worthy gifts which God can give us … yet we toil for them day and night, and take no rest.  Therefore God frequently gives riches to foolish people, to whom he gives nothing else.

Getting our own way serves only to get in the way of our service.

Welcome to all who gather to worship.  May you find rest within his sanctuary, grace to set your mind on Jesus and peace to set your heart at rest.

Within these walls we open our lives to truth.  We seek the healing of redemptive love.  We ask the forgiveness of judgment.  We reach out for companionship.  We seek awareness of those around us. We seek boldness to speak good news in the face of hostility.  We seek to know the spirit of him who taught us to pray.  This is your hour to ask, seek, knock and sing praise to God.

We welcome Dr. Earl Linderman to the pulpit this morning.

Sunday October 28, 2007 Announcements

The spirit you bring to this house determines what this hour will be for you.  Bring your needs and they will be met.  Bring your praise and it will be shared.  Seek hope and you will find it.  Seek release and you will find it.  Seek forgiveness and you will know joy.  May we unite our hearts and voices in God’s praise.

We continue to express our sympathies to the family and friends of Mrs. Elise B. Long, Adult Choir member, who died October 22.

Our Sunday evening youth group is sponsoring our “Fall Festival” for all ages after today’s worship service.  Based in the Family Life Center, we begin with a Poor Man’s lunch.  There will be a number of “booths” for your participation and enjoyment.  The youth ask that you make a donation for the festival; the funds raised will be divided among the “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” project being undertaken by the Sunday night Preschool group; our Sister Church program; and Samaritan’s International.  This will be our Family and Friends’ Night for October.  We thank Jon Kennedy for coordinating this program! The Sunday night groups will not meet today.

Be here for breakfast in the Family Life Center, as provided by Nancy and Aubrey Price, next Sunday at 9:30 AM!

On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation by nailing his theses on the door of the church at Wittenberg.  We observe this historic occasion along with all other Protestant churches on this designated “Reformation Sunday.”  We shall sing Luther’s powerful hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” today.

Sunday October 21, 2007 Announcements

The service of worship begins with the Chiming of the hour and the Prelude.  Please use this time as a period of meditation and contemplation.

Worship with hope in your heart and joy in your voice for God has made you in his image.  How awesome it is to be thought worthy of such an image.  How fantastic it is to live in the light of such an image.  How humbling it is to know that the image maker walks with you to keep you in that image.  Open your hearts and lift your voices to him in praise.

The Deacons will meet following the morning worship service.

The Sunday night groups will meet here today, beginning with the younger children’s group at 4 PM.  Jackie Schaefer and Stephanie Jackson are in charge of Children’s Group dinner, and Carla Kennedy is in charge of Youth dinner.

The congregation is invited to a drop in from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in the Family Life Center this Saturday to celebrate Ann Clark’s retirement.

Our Sunday evening youth group is sponsoring a special afternoon of activities for all ages after the worship service on Sunday, October 28.  Based in the Family Life Center, the “Fall Festival” begins with a Poor Man’s lunch and also includes a number of “booths” for your participation and enjoyment.  You may dress casually for the 11 AM worship service that day.  The youth ask that you make a donation for the festival; half of the funds raised will be used to support a “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” project being undertaken by the Sunday night Preschool group.  The other half will be given to a charity of the Youth Group’s choice, which will be determined soon. Volunteers are needed to help with planning and carrying out the festival; please see Jon Kennedy, or contact the church office if you can help.  This will be our Family and Friends’ Night for October.  The Adult Choir is responsible for set-up and clean-up.

Morning Prayer:  Take my hand Lord, and lead me through this day, step by step.  Remind me that I cannot do everything I wish, nor do any of it perfectly.  Only You are perfect and only with Your help can I do my best.  Help me remember to ask You for that help.

Worship speaks to the very heart of life.  It touches hurt and pain with healing.  It enters prison and frees the captive. It enters darkness and brings forth light.  It has its way with sin and has power over evil.  And yet it can touch and transform only what we will allow it to touch. Be thankful for his presence among us.

The flowers this morning are given in honor of Lillian Torrence by her family. Lillian celebrated her birthday yesterday.
